Morning meditations 1/5/15

This morning’s meditation will be Hebrews 2:11: “For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,”

The words “...He that sanctifieth” are speaking of Christ. The word “sanctifieth” (hagiazo) is a present active participle. It means “to make holy.” The active voice here means that Jesus as the subject is the One acting in this sanctification. The present tense means that it is an on going process. He continually sanctifies or makes holy.

The words “and they who are sanctified” are speaking of those whom Jesus sanctifies. “Are sanctified” is the same word that was just defined only here it is a present passive participle. The passive voice is where the subject (those of us whom Jesus sanctifies) is acted upon. We do not sanctify ourselves. It happens to us. We are the recipients of this sanctification. This is what is called positional sanctification. It is what we are made by the Lord in the experience of salvation.

The words “are all of one” identifies the source of our oneness. We are out of the same source, i.e., born of God. The oneness that we have with Him is a miracle of grace. This is one of those verses that makes me want to fall on my face and worship. This means I am in Him and whatever He is I am. This is what 1 Corinthians chapter 6 and verse 17 is talking about: “But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” 1 John chapter 4 and verse 17 says, “... Because as He is, so are we in this world.”

The words “for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren” is stating a result. The cause is stated in verse 9: “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.” Because of His death on the cross, He is able to so sanctify the believer that there is nothing left about that sanctified believer to be ashamed of. Colossians chapter 1 and verse 22 says, “In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight.”

No wonder the author of Hebrews says in chapter 2 and verse 3: “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him.” We truly have a great salvation and we should not neglect it.

I need a daily reminder of who I am in Christ. I need to be reminded of the enormity of God’s marvelous grace. It keeps me broken before His throne of Grace. There I find the help I need for the day.
