HE IS MASTER
John 13:13
Morning Meditation 3/8/2015
"Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am."
The word master means "teacher." The word Lord means, "to belong to someone." When you put these two words together you have Jesus saying, "you call me your teacher, and this is true. You call me Lord, and so I am. I am your Lord and master. One of the great lessons that Jesus taught His disciples is in this passage. He took the place of a servant. He told them in John 13:14-17, "If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them."
Jesus taught His disciples the way of true happiness. It is in our very nature to want to reach the heights among men. And this would have worked if man had not sinned. But he did sin. And he and all his descendants are totally unqualified to be a good ruler over others. So Jesus taught His disciples to be servants. He taught them the way to true happiness is to serve one another. As our Master--
HE SAVES
He saves from the penalty of sin. It is not as easy as speaking a world into existence. All He had to do to create was speak but to redeem a fallen race He had to bleed and die.
He not only saves from sin, He saves from other things. This is brought out in Luke 8:24, "And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm." Every time I read this passage of Scripture, I am amazed that one could have such power that all He had to do to terminate a raging storm and to calm turbulent waters was to speak the word, and the storm and waters would come to an obedient calm. Next as Master,
HE CALLS
John 11:28, "And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee."
There is the calling of salvation. Matthew 11:28-30, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Next--
HE IS SUPREME
Matthew 23:8, "But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren."
There is no Master that is so completely Lord as He. He knows all things. Many times when Jesus taught the people He addressed their thoughts. Many times He addressed their actions. Luke 6:1-5, "And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone? And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath." Jesus is Supreme. As Master--
HIS SERVANTS ARE RESPONSIBLE TO HIM
This means that there is an accounting day. Romans 14:12-13, "So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way."
We are not only accountable to Him directly for some wrong done, we are accountable to Him for how we treat other people. For instance we are not to cast a stumbling block in our brothers way. If we do, there will be a time of accounting where we answer to Him concerning our neglected obedience. As Master--
HE IS COMING AGAIN
Mark 13:35-37, "Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch." We are under His command and He has instructed us in the work He left us to do. He is coming again, and prophecy looks like it is time.
May the Lord bless these words to our hearts.
In Christ
