THE INDISPENSABLE COMFORTER
John 14:26
Morning Meditation 11/20/2012
John 14:26, "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
I would like to ask you a question? What do you think a Christian desires most in his spiritual life? I believe the answer is threefold: first the assurance of salvation. Second an understanding of the Word of God; and third the ability to make Jesus known to others.
If these are not the main concerns that we have they ought to be. The Lord Jesus is in every Christians life to satisfy these desires.
The word comforter means to cause one to remember. Another translation of the word Comforter is Advocate. This is brought out in 1 John 2:1, "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: “There are times when we need help in knowing God’s will as we face a difficult situation. The Holy Spirit has been sent (Pentecost) to do the work of Jesus in the life of the believer.
The first work of the Holy Spirit is the regeneration of the human spirit in the new birth. The Holy Spirit is the one who regenerates and makes the new birth a reality.
Then the Holy Spirit is the one who gives the assurance of salvation. The most miserable Christian on earth is the one who begins to doubt his salvation. Peter dealth with this truth in 2 Peter 1:9, "But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins."
The Holy Spirit is absolutely essential in salvation. Therefore He is essential in the regaining of assurance of salvation.
The Holy Spirit is also essential in understanding of the Word of God. He is the illuminator of His Word. It is amazing how He “turns the light on” as we read His Word. John 14:26, "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
The Word of God that we have today was written by those who received the words from the illumination of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 2:12-13, "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual."
The Holy Spirit is real to make Jesus a testimony to saving Grace. Only the Holy Spirit can make us known to others. 1 Corinthians 2:4, "And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:"
After the Holy Spirit was poured out on the church on the day of Pentecost, Peter preached and 3,000 souls were saved and added to the church. Someone has said the early church prayed and he place was shaken; the modern church pays and the place is taken.
May the Lord bless you,
In Christ
