GOD’S MARVELOUS POWER

Psa 62:11

Morning Meditations 7/4/17

I would like for us to think of God’s power: “God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.” One of the attributes of God is Omnipotence. This simply means that He is all powerful. There is nothing we have ever seen that is all powerful. There is nothing in the life to compare Omnipotence to. However, some of the things God has done gives us a glimpse of it. God spoke and the world was created (Psa 33:6,9). I mean everything we see and the things we don’t see (Heb 11:3). No real Christian has any trouble believing that. We have a problem explaining it. Especially trying to explain it to an unsaved person. Incidentally, you will never explain even what the Bible says about it to an unsaved person. ! Cor. 2:14: “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” I do not understand why some Christians waste their time trying to explain something to an unsaved person when God has told us plainly they cannot understand. Let me put it another way. If you can explain the Bible to an unsaved man and he understands, you have proven the Bible false. We need to win the unsaved to Christ and in the experience of salvation God gives him the capacity to understand spiritual things. Then an explanation is in order. Now if an unsaved person asks you a question about what the Bible says, don’t tell him he’s too dumb to learn. That’s not how to win friends and influence people! He would certainly not appreciate that! If he asks you a question about the Bible, answer it to the best of your ability. Just don’t be surprised when he doesn’t understand.. Then use the answer to his question to move to meet his need by presenting the gospel. The Holy Spirit will help you do that.

God is all powerful. When we think of God’s power, we think of creation power, or power that can part the waters of the Red sea. But this attribute of God’s power is available every day in one of the most important areas of all. It is His power to save. Romans chapter 1 and verse 16 says, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” The word for power here is dunamis and means “inherent power, power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature, or which a person or thing exerts and puts forth.” The verb is is a present tense verb that links the gospel to power, i.e., the gospel is the power. The power is inherent in the gospel. And it is the power of God. Furthermore, it is the power of God unto salvation. The gospel is not the power of God for anything else. The living God whose attribute is omnipotence moves in His power every time the gospel is presented to an unsaved person and that unsaved person responds in faith. It is like the woman with the issue of blood who said, “If I can touch the hem of His garment I will be made whole.” She made her way through the crowd until she could reach the hem of His garment and the moment she touched it power went out of Jesus and healed her. The moment a person believes the gospel, power goes out from God and the person is saved. It is power to change fishermen into Apostles, adulterous women into saints (the woman at Jacob’s well), wicked business men into benevolent disciples (Zacchaeus) and on and on we could go. It is no less than the power of God that changes wicked men and women into joyous saints.

This takes care of the idea that “I am too bad for God to save.” The man or woman who says “I’m too bad for God to save” has just qualified for the grace of God. Jesus didn’t come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. The gospel is good news for bad people. The moment one confesses himself as a bad person, he has become a candidate for salvation. And the gospel is the power of God unto salvation.

The power of God is the power to sustain. The wonderful thing about God is that when He saves, He commits Himself to you eternally. Philippians chapter 1 and verse 6 says “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” A person who is saved is going to have all kinds of problems. He may deny Christ like Peter. He may be like those described by Peter in his second Epistle chapter 1 and verse 9: “But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.” Does God forsake the person described in this verse? No.. He which hath begun a good work (the work of salvation) will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. The Lord will not forsake you even if your faith fails. 2 Timothy chapter 2 and verse 13 says “If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” Once you are saved, you are God’s child and His responsibility. He is committed to you. He will not fail you. He cannot deny Himself. His power is the power that sustains you. God is all powerful. You can depend on God. He is not a liar.

Jude 24 says, “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,” How can He present us faultless? It is His power and grace that does this. The only way a sinner can become faultless is through Jesus Christ. Colossians chapter 1 and verses 21-22 say “And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:” Notice the words “in your mind.” There are people who have not committed some gross sin in deed. But their thought life is a real battle ground. You would be surprised to find out some of those people you consider holy people are among those described here. They have thoughts planted in their minds by Satan and they are so self condemned that they think they have gone too far for God to save. Well, for starters they are already saved. Now don’t jump on me at this point. I am one of those of whom I speak. At times when I am in prayer, the most awful horrible thoughts come to mind. Am I unsaved because this happens? No. I was saved as a nine-year-old boy. I have been saved every since. He that performed a good work in me will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. How is doubt overcome at this point? We must reassert out confidence in what God says. He will keep us from falling. He will sustain us until the day of Jesus Christ. It is His power that does this. Do you believe God has the power to sustain you? Then rest your case in His hands. He cannot fail. God is omnipotent. When we get to heaven and Moses discusses the Red Sea experience, and the awesome power of it, there will be those who will testify that God’s power operated also in their behalf. God got them through their doubts, forgave them their sins, sustained them by His grace and got them to glory. Hallelujah!!

Power belongeth unto God. He uses it daily to sustain the universe, to save sinners, and to restore sinning saints. He uses this power to keep us from falling so that He can present us faultless before the throne of His glory with exceeding joy.

May God bless these words to our hearts.

In Christ
